About this place

The Alte Donau (Old Danube) is a former oxbow of the Danube River in Vienna's 22nd district, now a warm, shallow lake that is the city's premier inland bathing spot. The FKK section — designated and signed — sits at the northern end of the lake near the Gänsehäufel peninsula, Vienna's famous outdoor bathing island.

FKK use at the Alte Donau dates to the 1920s, when Vienna's municipal bathing culture was among the most progressive in Europe. The tradition survived the war, the occupation, and post-war conservatism to remain one of Austria's most urban and accessible naturist locations. The lake is warm (reaching 26°C in summer), clean, and directly accessible by U-Bahn (line U1 to Kaisermühlen-Vienna International Centre, then a short walk or bus to the waterfront). Gänsehäufel itself charges a modest entry fee and has full facilities; the FKK meadow beyond is the main draw for naturists.

Who visits

Viennese locals, tourists staying in central Vienna who want a half-day beach excursion. Mixed ages, very family-unfamiliar with some areas. The FKK section draws a committed regular crowd.

How to find it

U1 to Kaisermühlen or Alte Donau station, then follow signs to Gänsehäufel. The FKK section is at the far northern end of the Gänsehäufel island, beyond the main bathing areas. Signage is in German; look for 'FKK-Bereich'.

Things to watch out for

The main Gänsehäufel bathing area is mixed-use and busy in July–August. The FKK area is quieter. Water quality is monitored by the city; EU Bathing Water Directive compliance is consistently reported.

Etiquette & ground rules

This is a long-established urban FKK section. Behave as you would at any European city FKK beach: textiles stay in the textile areas, respect the space, no photography. Vienna's FKK culture is low-key and self-policing.
