About this place

Praia do Abano is a clothing-optional beach in Sintra, Lisbon, Portugal. The Portuguese naturist tradition is anchored by the Federação Portuguesa de Naturismo (FPN), the national federation, and by a network of officially-designated naturist beaches established under a 1995 framework. Praia do Salto on the Costa Vicentina was the first formally-designated naturist beach in Portugal; Praia Adegas and other Algarve beaches followed. The Costa da Caparica strip south of Lisbon (Setúbal district) has a long-established informal naturist tradition.

Portuguese law does not specifically prohibit non-sexual nudity. Article 171 of the Penal Code addresses sexual indecent exposure and requires sexual intent — mere nudity at established naturist beaches is not within the statute's reach. For the broader legal context, see our public nudity laws guide.

Etiquette & ground rules

Respect the established naturist character of the beach: be discreet, avoid photography, and follow the lead of regulars. Officially-designated FPN beaches are clearly marked; informal naturist beaches operate under custom and tolerance. Always carry a towel for shared seating. Portuguese coastal beaches face the Atlantic — bring layers and a windbreak even in summer, and respect any posted dune-protection or nesting-bird signage.
