Clothing-Optional Czech Republic: Lakes, Ponds & FKK Tradition

The Czech Republic is landlocked — no coastline, no naturist rivieras — but it has 84 documented naturist spots spread across every region of the country. All of them are freshwater: lakes, reservoirs, flooded quarries, and former gravel pits where FKK culture has been quietly established for decades. No formal designation system, no permit required, just the accumulated weight of long usage at specific spots that everyone in the region already knows about.

The Czech Republic doesn’t have a coastline. What it has instead is 84 naturist spots spread across every region of the country — more documented locations than many nations with ocean beaches. They are all freshwater: glacial lakes, post-war reservoirs, flooded quarry ponds, river bends where naturist tradition established itself quietly in the FKK decades of the 1970s and 1980s and hasn’t moved since. No formal designation system manages them. No federation card is required to visit them. They persist on accumulated usage and local knowledge, and they’re among the most relaxed naturist environments in central Europe.

This guide covers the full regional picture — the anchor lakes and reservoirs, the písník gravel-pit belt around Prague, the South Bohemian pond country, the Moravian reservoirs, and the logistical context for visitors approaching Czech naturism for the first time. All 84 locations in our directory are linked.

Czech law has no statute that criminalises nudity as such. The relevant provision is Section 358 of the Criminal Code (přestupek — a minor administrative offence) covering conduct that grossly offends public morality or disrupts public order. Courts interpret this provision narrowly: conduct must be objectively offensive in its context, which means naturist bathing at an established informal naturist location — away from general public swimming areas and typically self-segregated by section or signage — does not meet the threshold.

The practical consequence is that Czech naturism has operated without a formal designation system for decades. France requires a prefectoral decree; Germany requires a municipal FKK designation; the UK requires a council resolution. The Czech Republic requires none of these. The spots in this guide have naturist reputations built on decades of use, and that informal legitimacy is sufficient. Czech police have not historically targeted naturist bathers at established locations.

The Czech Naturist Federation (Česká naturistická federace, ČNF) is affiliated with the International Naturist Federation (INF) and organises events and advocacy, but it does not operate a system of registered naturist venues the way BN does in the UK or the FFN does in France. Visiting any of the locations in this guide does not require ČNF membership.

Prague and Central Bohemia: The Písník Belt

Central Bohemia has 20 naturist locations — the densest concentration in the country — and most of them owe their existence to the písník. Sand and gravel extraction, particularly intensive in the flat river basins north and east of Prague during the communist era, left a landscape of flooded quarry ponds with clean sandy bottoms and warm shallow water. By the 1970s, naturist culture had colonised the quieter ones, and it has remained there since.

Within the city itself, Hostivar Nudist Beach is the closest naturist option to the centre — a designated section of the Hostivar reservoir in Prague 10, reachable by metro to Háje and a short walk. It draws a local crowd, is not a tourist destination, and functions as a working-class neighbourhood beach that happens to be naturist. Naturistická nudapláž Šeberák and Džbán are the other inner-Prague options — lake beaches in suburban Prague that have carried naturist sections since the 1970s.

East of Prague along the Elbe (Labe) and its tributary the Jizera, the písník belt begins in earnest. Jezero Sadská near Nymburk, Čelákovice písník, Tišice-Neratovice, and Vojkovice form a cluster of naturist gravel pits within 30–40km of the city that have served as Prague’s informal naturist hinterland for generations. These are not scenic destinations in the tourist sense — they are working-class day-trip beaches, flat and unpretentious — but water quality is good, they are genuinely warm by July, and the naturist tradition is deep-rooted enough that newcomers are unremarkable.

North of Prague, toward Mělník where the Vltava meets the Elbe, FKK Baraba, Cítov, Mělník is one of the better-known naturist spots in the region — a riverside naturist section with a longer history and a slightly more established character than the písník spots. KOBYLNÍKY, Nový rybník, and the Lhota Stará Boleslav spot complete the ring north and northeast of the capital.

West of Prague, the landscape changes: limestone escarpments and flooded quarries rather than river-basin písníky. Lom Velká Amerika, Lom Malá Amerika, Lom Homolák, and Lom Kosov are flooded limestone quarries — deeper, cooler, and more dramatic than the eastern písník ponds — where naturist bathing has existed alongside general swimming for decades. Motol and Říčany are additional central Bohemian options south and southwest of the city.

Taken together, Prague offers more naturist options within a 60km radius than almost any other European capital. A week in Prague can include a different naturist lake or pond every day without significant travel.

South Bohemia: Reservoirs, Ponds, and the Třeboň Fishpond Country

South Bohemia has 15 naturist locations — the second-highest regional count — concentrated in two geographic zones: the Vltava reservoir system in the Šumava foothills and the ancient fishpond networks of the Třeboň basin.

FKK Tábor at the Jordán reservoir (FKK Tábor, Jordán) is the region’s anchor naturist spot. The Jordán is a medieval reservoir — one of the oldest man-made lakes in Czech lands, built in the 15th century to supply Tábor with water — and it has carried a naturist section since at least the 1970s. It is a proper lake, not a gravel pit, and the naturist tradition here has depth and local credibility. Košín u Tábora is the second Tábor-area option, a smaller pond closer to the town.

Lipno (LIPNO) is the largest reservoir in the Czech Republic — a Vltava impoundment on the border with Austria in the Šumava highlands. The main tourist infrastructure is on the northern shore; the naturist tradition operates on quieter sections of the 48km shoreline. The setting is genuinely beautiful: forest coming to the water’s edge, clean cold water, mountain air. Orlická přehrada is the second major Vltava reservoir with naturist use, further north and more easily accessible from Prague.

The Třeboň basin is Europe’s most extensive managed fishpond system — hundreds of ponds connected by canals, maintained since the 15th century. Several carry naturist traditions: Nudapláž Cep I ostrov - Majdalena (FKK) and Nudi pláž Cep II are the best known, using the large ponds east of Třeboň as naturist destinations. SVĚT rybník, Třeboň — one of the historic Třeboň ponds, immediately adjacent to the spa town — is another. Nudapláž – horusická pískovna, Pískovna Jindřiš, and LÍŠNICKÝ RYBNÍK complete the South Bohemian fishpond naturist cluster.

Further south, Nudapláž – horusická pískovna in the Českobudějovice basin and UJEZDEC (Čičenice), VELKÝ JEZ, Rybník Horní Mrzatec, SKALIČNÝ RYBNÍK, and ŠTILEC fill out the network of smaller ponds with naturist use across the region.

North Bohemia: Máchovo Jezero and the Liberec Lakes

The Liberec region, in the foothills of the Jizerské hory and Lužické hory mountains near the German and Polish borders, contains 7 naturist locations. The most important is Nudistická pláž Klůček, Máchovo jezero.

Máchovo jezero — Lake Mácha, named for the Romantic poet Karel Hynek Mácha whose 1836 poem Máj (May) established the lake as a Czech cultural touchstone — is the best-known naturist swimming destination in the country. It is not a písník or reservoir but a shallow glacial lake, 3.5km long, with sandy shores and unusually warm summer water temperatures (the warmest in Bohemia, consistently reaching 25°C by July) that make it a major summer swimming destination for all of Bohemia. The Klůček naturist beach is a well-established section on the southern shore with a longer history than almost any other Czech naturist spot.

The Liberec region’s other naturist spots cluster around the city of Jablonec nad Nisou: Mšeno, Jablonec, Bedřichovská přehrada, Černá Nisa, and Naturistická nuda FKK pláž Hamr na Jezeře are reservoir and lake naturist spots in the mountain basin above the city. Mníšek, Fojtka, Vesecký rybník, and Příšovice complete the Liberec cluster.

The Jizerské hory foothills add a different character to these spots — cooler water temperatures than the Bohemian plain, more forest surroundings, and a more secluded feel than the písník spots near Prague.

Northwest Bohemia: The Ústí nad Labem Cluster

The Ústí nad Labem region, in the Elbe gorge country on the German border, has 5 naturist locations centred on the region’s two major reservoirs. This is industrial Bohemia — the landscape bears the marks of the postwar brown-coal extraction period — but the naturist tradition is as well-established here as anywhere in the country.

Nechranice reservoir carries two naturist spots: Nechranice přehrada, Ohře on the main body of the reservoir and Nechranice - Vitčice on a bay at its eastern end. Nechranice is the largest reservoir in Bohemia and a major summer recreation destination; the naturist sections are well away from the main tourist infrastructure.

FKK Píšťany, Velké Žernoseky is a riverside naturist spot on the Elbe between Litoměřice and Ústí nad Labem — one of the region’s more scenic options, with the Elbe sandstone cliffs providing a dramatic backdrop. Pískovna Braňany and Oldřichov complete the regional count.

East Bohemia: Rozkoš and Hradec Králové

The Hradec Králové region, in the flat agricultural country of east Bohemia toward the Polish and Slovak borders, has 9 naturist locations — the highest count outside Central and South Bohemia. The anchor is FKK ROZKOŠ u České.

Rozkoš reservoir, built in the 1970s near České Skalice in the Náchod district, is one of the warmest and most popular recreational lakes in east Bohemia. Its naturist section — among the more organised in the country, with an established community and longer summer season than the mountain-adjacent spots — has operated continuously since the reservoir matured in the 1980s. STŘÍBRNÝ RYBNÍK (Silver Pond) near the city of Hradec Králové is a smaller urban lake naturist option.

ADRŠPACH, pískovna is the most scenically unusual naturist spot in the country. Adršpach-Teplice Rocks is one of the Czech Republic’s premier natural landmarks — a sandstone rock-town landscape of towers and gorges. The associated písník (gravel pit) at Adršpach has a naturist tradition that contrasts memorably with the tourist-heavy rock trails nearby. BOROHRÁDEK, Týniště, PAMĚTNÍK, SMIŘICE, Čibuz, RUSEK u HK, TICHÁ ORLICE, and U DUBU complete the regional network, forming a web of naturist spots across the flat country between Hradec Králové and the Krkonoše mountain foothills.

Pardubice and Vysočina: The Central Spine

The Pardubice region (5 locations) and Vysočina highlands (4 locations) form the central corridor of the country between Bohemia and Moravia.

In Pardubice, Jedlovské rybníky, Poličsko are ponds in the Vysočina highlands edge country. Naturistická nuda pláž Oplatil Hrádek and OPLATIL - HRÁDEK are adjacent listings for the same natural area along the Labe. Nudistická pláž Opaťák u Hradce Králové and MĚLICE complete the count.

Vysočina — the forested upland plateau that crosses the traditional Bohemian-Moravian border — has 4 naturist spots: BOROVINKA, Jezírko, and Lomy Lipnice are pond and quarry-lake naturist spots in the highland interior. Naturistická nuda pláž Velké Dářko is the most interesting — Velké Dářko is one of the largest natural lakes in the Bohemian-Moravian Highlands, a peat-margined lake in the Žďárské vrchy uplands, and its naturist section is one of the more scenic freshwater naturist spots in the country.

West Bohemia: Plzeň and Karlovy Vary

West Bohemia (Plzeň region, 4 locations; Karlovy Vary region, 3 locations) is the least naturist-dense part of the country — closer to Bavaria, more spa-oriented, with fewer písník lakes — but it has a functional network.

In Plzeň, Nudistická pláž Ejpovice - nudist beach is a písník east of the city and one of the more accessible options for visitors based in Plzeň. Nudistická pláž Ostende is the city lake option — a section of the Bolevecká ponds system, historically popular. SUŠICE, Páteček is a riverside naturist spot in the Šumava foothills, and Zatopený čedičový lom Pavlovice is a flooded basalt quarry in the Tachov district near the German border — cooler, deeper, and more dramatic than the písník ponds.

The Karlovy Vary region — home to the famous spa triangle of Karlovy Vary, Mariánské Lázně, and Františkovy Lázně — has 3 naturist spots: Mytsky rybnik, TATROVICE, and ČANKOV - OTOVICE. The spa culture of the region overlaps with but is distinct from the naturist tradition; the naturist spots here are lake and pond naturism rather than the thermal bathing of the spa towns.

Moravia: Brno, Olomouc, and the East

Moravia — the eastern third of the country, culturally and geographically distinct from Bohemia — has a smaller but complete naturist network covering four regions.

South Moravian, the Brno-centred region, has 3 locations. Naturistická nudapláž Brněnská přehrada is the main one: the Brno reservoir (Brněnská přehrada) is the largest reservoir in Moravia and the primary summer recreation destination for the city’s 380,000 residents. The naturist section on its northern shore is well-established and draws a genuinely urban, mixed crowd. KŘETÍNKA, Letovice and Růženin lom are the region’s other options.

Olomouc region has 4 naturist spots: FKK Osek u Lipníka nad Bečvou, písník Jadran is a písník in the flat Haná agricultural lowland north of Olomouc. MOHELNICE, Moravičany and NÁKLO, písník are further gravel-pit naturist spots in the Morava river basin. Nudistická pláž jezera Poděbrady is a lake naturist section in the Olomouc area.

Moravian-Silesian, the industrial northeast bordering Silesia and Slovakia, has 3 naturist spots: Hlučín, štěrkovna near Ostrava, KRNOV, Petrův důl, and Naturistická nuda pláž Větřkovická přehrada. Hlučín-štěrkovna, a gravel-pit lake north of Ostrava, is among the most visited recreational lakes in Silesia; its naturist section is well-established within the larger beach-park infrastructure.

Zlín region, in southeast Moravia near the Slovak border, has 1 location: OSTROŽSKÁ NOVÁ VES, a naturist spot in the White Carpathian foothills near Uherské Hradiště.

Planning a Czech Naturist Trip

Getting there. Prague’s Václav Havel Airport is the main international entry point, with good connections from UK, German, and US hub cities. Brno’s Tuřany Airport has limited international services but works for the Moravian naturist cluster. Czech Railways (České dráhy) and regional buses connect the main cities; a hire car adds significant flexibility for reaching the smaller lake and pond spots, many of which have no direct public transport.

When to go. Peak naturist season is July and August. Czech lake water temperatures peak in late July — Máchovo jezero regularly hits 25°C, the warmest natural swimming in Bohemia. Late June and early September work on good-weather years but carry the risk of cool water and sparse company. The Central Bohemian písník spots benefit from the urban heat island: water temperatures at Hostivar and Šeberák are often 1–2°C warmer than the rural reservoir spots in the same week.

Where to base yourself. Prague is the best base for variety — more naturist spots within 60km than any other city in the country. Brno works for the South Moravian and Olomouc clusters. Tábor or České Budějovice for South Bohemia. Liberec or Jablonec nad Nisou for Máchovo jezero and the northern lakes.

What to expect. Czech naturist spots are informal and local. Facilities are basic at most — a grassy or sandy shore, perhaps changing areas, rarely more. The crowd is predominantly Czech, locally rooted, and not particularly tourist-oriented. Czech naturism at its best is what Central European freshwater bathing culture looks like without the packaging: people who have been coming to the same pond for thirty years, unhurried, undramatic, and entirely uninterested in explaining themselves.

Czech vocabulary. Naturistická pláž or nudistická pláž = naturist beach. Písník = gravel-pit lake. Rybník = fishpond. Přehrada = reservoir. Jezero = natural lake. Lom = quarry (often flooded). FKK is used directly, as in Germany.

Czech naturism is part of a Central European freshwater FKK tradition that extends across borders. Germany’s inland lake naturism — the Berlin písník belt, the Bavarian reservoir spots — shares the same cultural DNA. Austria has similar lake-and-pond informal naturism. If you’re planning a Central European naturist circuit, the Germany guide covers the German network in full.

For the nearest Continental beach naturism, Croatia’s Adriatic FKK coast is 6–8 hours south by car or a short flight from Prague. The Croatia guide covers the full Adriatic naturist network. France’s Naturist Coast in Nouvelle-Aquitaine (CHM Montalivet, La Jenny, Euronat) is accessible overland or via low-cost carriers from Prague to Bordeaux. See the France cornerstone for context.

For visitors new to naturism anywhere in the world, the First Time at a Nude Beach guide addresses the universal questions — what to expect, how to behave, how to get past the initial awkwardness — in terms that apply as much to a Czech lake naturist section as to a French beach resort.
