Clothing-Optional Sweden: The Complete Guide to Swedish Naturism
Sweden has 77 documented naturist bathing spots spread across 19 counties — sea beaches on the southern and west coasts, Baltic shores north of Stockholm, island beaches on Gotland and Öland, inland lakes in Värmland and Dalarna, and a handful of spots north of the Arctic Circle in Västerbotten and Norrbotten. The whole network rests on two pillars: the Sveriges Naturistförbund federation and the allemansrätten, Sweden's constitutional right of public access to nature.
Sweden’s naturist tradition is an extension of friluftsliv — the outdoor-life philosophy that treats time in nature as a basic human requirement, not a leisure activity. The same culture that sends Swedes to the forest in October and to frozen lakes in January sends them to naturist bathing spots in July, and it does so without much self-consciousness. The Sveriges Naturistförbund (SNF), founded in 1946, has been organising this for 80 years; the allemansrätten — the constitutional right of public access to Sweden’s nature — gives it a legal foundation that most countries lack. The result is 77 naturist spots distributed across every part of the country.
This guide covers the full network by region: the Stockholm archipelago spots, the Skåne south coast and its famous urban bathing pier in Malmö, the Halland and Västra Götaland west coast, Gotland island in the Baltic, the Kalmar and Baltic coast north of Stockholm, the inland lake county of Värmland, and the far-northern spots in Västerbotten and Norrbotten. All 77 locations are linked.
The Legal Framework
Sweden has no statute that criminalises nudity in itself. The relevant provision is the Public Order Act (Ordningslagen, 1993:1617), which includes a clause on conduct grossly offensive to public decency in a public place — but Swedish courts interpret this provision narrowly and in context, and established naturist bathing at known naturist spots does not meet its threshold.
The more important legal context is the allemansrätten — literally “every man’s right”, enshrined in Chapter 2, Section 15 of the Swedish Constitution. It guarantees the public right to walk, cycle, ride, swim, and camp in Sweden’s natural environments regardless of land ownership, subject to the obligation not to damage or disturb. For naturism, this means that remote lake and coastal nude bathing is legally uncontested in a way that it simply isn’t in France, Germany, or the United Kingdom. You are not trespassing; you are exercising a constitutional right.
The practical constraint is proximity to residential areas. Nudity in an urban park or on a populated urban beach without designated naturist status would engage the Ordningslagen provision. At the 77 spots in this directory — most of which are formally designated, historically established, or remote — the legal position is unproblematic.
The SNF (Sveriges Naturistförbund) maintains an active advocacy relationship with Swedish municipalities. Several of the publicly accessible naturist beaches in this guide — including Ribersborgsbadet in Malmö, Källtorp in Nacka, and Rullsand on the Uppsala coast — carry explicit municipal endorsement or are maintained with municipal support.
Stockholm and the Archipelago
Stockholm county has 14 naturist spots — the largest concentration in Sweden — spread across the city itself and the vast Stockholm archipelago (30,000 islands, islets, and rocks stretching 60km east into the Baltic).
Within the city, the closest options to the centre are on the islands that make Stockholm what it is. Glasbruksudden on Lidingö — a residential island just east of the city connected by bridge — is one of the best-positioned naturist bathing spots in any European capital: a rocky outcrop with warm Baltic water, accessible by tram from central Stockholm. Källtorp Nude Beach in Nacka, on the city’s eastern edge, is a lake naturist spot reachable by public transport. Kärsöns naturistbad is an established naturist lake site in the western suburbs.
On the city’s southern edge, Ågesta Naturist Beach in Haninge is a lake naturist spot popular for day trips. Tullans Naturistbad in Salem, Lövnäsbadet in Nykvarn, Säby Träsk on Lidingö, and Långholmen (a small island in the middle of the city, better known for its former prison) add to the immediate-Stockholm network.
In the archipelago, Björnö-Björkvik on Värmdö is a nature-reserve island with naturist bathing on its quieter shores. Torpesand Strandbad on Värmdö is an established naturist beach on the outer archipelago. Svärdsön in Nacka is a smaller island option. PGs udde, Breviksbadet Naturistbad, and Brunnsvikens naturist beach complete the Stockholm archipelago naturist network.
The archipelago spots require boat access — the Waxholmsbolaget ferry network covers the major islands, but some of the smaller spots require private boat or kayak. The payoff is the archipelago itself: red wooden boathouses, pine trees growing to the waterline, clean cold Baltic water, and a spacious solitude that urban beach naturism can’t replicate.
Skåne: The South Coast and Ribersborgsbadet
Skåne — Sweden’s southernmost county, flatter and warmer than the rest of the country, separated from Denmark by the 4km Øresund strait — has 9 naturist spots and Sweden’s most famous naturist venue.
Ribersborgsbadet Naturistbad (usually just called “Ribban”) is an outdoor bathing pier extending into the Øresund off Malmö’s western beachfront. The original pier structure dates to 1898, making it one of the oldest outdoor bathing facilities in Scandinavia. It has separate segregated sections and a mixed naturist section (the brygga — pier — that gives our record its name), a wood-fired sauna, outdoor showers, and hot and cold plunge pools. In July it is one of the most visited naturist venues in Scandinavia; in January Swedes use it for sauna-and-cold-plunge winter bathing. The Ribersborg beach itself is Malmö’s main urban bathing beach — 1.5km of sand running west from the Öresund Bridge towers — and the naturist pier is integrated into the normal life of the beach. Getting there: tram from central Malmö, 15 minutes.
Sandhammaren is the polar opposite: remote, wild, and extraordinary. It sits at the southeastern tip of Sweden — the exact point where the Baltic and the Øresund meet — and it has 8km of white quartz sand dunes backed by pine forest, with water on two sides and a lighthouse at the point. It has one of the longest naturist-use traditions in Sweden. The naturist section is the eastern end of the beach, less accessed and more private than the family swimming areas further west. Getting there requires a car; there is no public transport to this part of Skåne.
Skanörs Nudist Beach on the Falsterbo peninsula (the westernmost point of Sweden) is a flat Baltic beach on the migration-bird coast — the narrow land bridge where hundreds of thousands of birds funnel southward in autumn. Ålabodarna and Knähaken in Helsingborg are north Skåne coastal options; Lomma nude beach, Ystad Strandskog Nakenbad, Ängelholm nakenbad, and Naturistbad/hundbad havsbad complete the Skåne count.
Halland: The West Coast Strip
Halland — a narrow coastal county stretching 150km between Gothenburg and Malmö along the Kattegat — has 7 naturist spots and one of the strongest coastal naturist traditions in Sweden. The Halland coast is sandy, relatively warm by Swedish standards (the Kattegat runs warmer than the Baltic), and the naturist tradition here is well-established and unpretentious.
Getterön near Varberg is the most significant. Getterön is a peninsula nature reserve north of Varberg connected to the mainland by a narrow causeway, primarily known as one of Sweden’s premier bird-watching sites but with a long-standing naturist bathing tradition on its western shore. The combination of protected nature, open sea views, and flat sandy beach makes it one of the more beautiful naturist spots on the Swedish west coast.
Hökafältet near Laholm in southern Halland is another well-known coastal naturist spot — a sandy beach on a flat coastal plain. Tjuvahålan Naturistbad and Lynga havsbad are in the Halmstad municipality. Långaveka near Falkenberg, Kalven Särö in the Kungsbacka municipality just south of Gothenburg, and Heden near Halmstad complete the Halland network.
Västra Götaland: Gothenburg and the Bohuslän Coast
Västra Götaland — Sweden’s largest county by area, containing Gothenburg (Sweden’s second city) and the entire Bohuslän coast north to the Norwegian border — has 6 naturist spots.
Amundön is the anchor. A small protected island south of Gothenburg in the southern Gothenburg archipelago, Amundön is a nature reserve accessible by a short bridge from the mainland. Its western rocky shoreline has a long-established naturist bathing tradition, and the spot is well known enough that it functions as the main Gothenburg-area naturist destination. Smithska Udden is a second Gothenburg-area option on the southern outskirts of the city.
North on the Bohuslän coast, Kattholmen near Strömstad is an island naturist spot close to the Norwegian border — remote, rocky Bohuslän coast at its most characteristic. Mollön near Uddevalla, Truvebadet near Lidköping on Lake Vänern (Sweden’s largest lake), and Stora Hornsjön in Marks municipality round out the western Sweden naturist network.
Gotland: The Baltic Island
Gotland — Sweden’s largest island, sitting in the middle of the Baltic 90km east of the mainland — has 3 naturist spots. It is a distinct naturist destination in the Swedish context: longer sunshine hours than the mainland, warmer sea temperatures, and a summer culture that draws visitors from across Sweden and from Germany and Denmark.
Hidevikens Naturist Beach is the island’s main naturist spot — a sandy beach in a sheltered cove on Gotland’s east coast, well-established and specifically known in Swedish naturist circles. Norsta Auren in the island’s north is a second designated naturist beach. Ardre in the south is the third.
Gotland’s naturist season runs slightly longer than the mainland — water temperatures hold warmer into September, and the island’s flat limestone terrain absorbs heat in a way the forested mainland doesn’t. Visby, the medieval walled capital on the west coast, is an hour’s ferry from Nynäshamn (south of Stockholm) or 20 minutes by plane from Stockholm Arlanda.
Kalmar and the Öland Coast
Kalmar county, on the Baltic coast opposite the island of Öland, has 4 naturist spots.
Lyckesand on Öland is the county’s most notable entry. Öland — the long, narrow limestone island connected to mainland Sweden by bridge from Kalmar — is one of Sweden’s main summer destinations, and Lyckesand is a sandy naturist beach on the island’s east coast. Gränsö near Västervik is a nature-reserve island naturist spot in the northern part of the county. Bjuggöbadet near Vimmerby and Värsnäs nakenbad near Kalmar city complete the county’s network.
Uppsala and Gävleborg: Baltic Coast North of Stockholm
Uppsala county (4 spots) and Gävleborg (4 spots) cover the Baltic coast immediately north of Stockholm up through the Hälsingland region.
Rullsand Naturistbad near Älvkarleby in Uppsala county is the most established naturist beach north of Stockholm — a Baltic sand beach on the flat Uppland coast with a well-documented naturist tradition. Tallparksbadet near Östhammar, Ängsö Nakenbad near Enköping on Lake Mälaren, and Östabadet near Heby add to the Uppsala county network.
In Gävleborg, Hölick near Hudiksvall is the best-known naturist spot in Hälsingland — a sandy promontory on the Gulf of Bothnia coast with a naturist section that has operated for decades. Fönebo at Norra Dellen is a lake naturist spot in the Dellen lakes system. Sandarna near Söderhamn and Toröbadet near Ljusdal complete the regional count.
Värmland: Inland Lake Country
Värmland — the forested lake county on the Norwegian border west of Stockholm, the landscape of Selma Lagerlöf’s Gösta Berlings saga — has 4 naturist spots, all freshwater.
Skutberget near Karlstad on the southern shore of Lake Vänern is the county’s main naturist spot — a lake peninsula with a well-established naturist tradition. Lake Vänern, at 5,655 km², is Western Europe’s largest lake; its southern Värmland shores, calm and wooded, are a substantial natural resource for naturist bathing. Kråkviken and Sandvikarna Vålön in Kristinehamn municipality, and Sandviken in Filipstad municipality add to the Värmland lake naturist network.
The Smaller Counties
The remaining Swedish naturist spots are spread across 10 further counties.
Östergötland (3 spots): Lilla Älgsjön near Norrköping, Viggebybadet Naturistbad in Kinda municipality, and Vätterviksbadets nakenbad on Lake Vättern near Vadstena. The Vättern spot is notable — Lake Vättern is Sweden’s second-largest lake and unusually deep and clear; the naturist section near Vadstena is on the lake’s eastern shore.
Örebro (2 spots): Gustavsberg Strand near Nora and Trumöbadet Naturistbad near Laxå.
Västmanland (2 spots): Herrfallet Naturistbad Fribad near Arboga and Östra Holmen Nakenbad near Västerås.
Södermanland (2 spots): Malsjön near Strängnäs and Ältaren near Flen.
Kronoberg (2 spots): Skälsnäs beach and Växjö Nakenbad — both in the Växjö area of the Småland lake district.
Blekinge (1 spot): Almö near Ronneby/Karlskrona — an island naturist spot in the Blekinge archipelago.
Jönköping (1 spot): Baskarpbadet near Habo on the northern shore of Lake Vättern.
The Far North: Västerbotten, Västernorrland, and Norrbotten
Sweden north of the 63rd parallel — Ångermanland, Västerbotten, and Norrbotten — is remote by most European naturism standards, but it has established spots that operate in Sweden’s extreme summer.
Västerbotten (5 spots) has the largest northern cluster. Dragonuddens Nakenbad near Umeå is the main one — Umeå (population 130,000) is the largest city in northern Sweden and its naturist beach is a well-established local institution. Killingsand near Robertsfors, Sandviken at Önskasjön near Bjurholm, Skibbiken Nude Beach near Sorsele (deep in the Lappland wilderness), and Stamsjöbadet near Åsele complete the Västerbotten count.
Västernorrland (2 spots): Smackgrundet near Timrå and Storsand near Örnsköldsvik on the High Coast (a UNESCO World Heritage Site for its dramatic post-Ice Age rebound topography).
Norrbotten (2 spots): Lulviksbadet near Luleå and Pite Ocean Beach near Piteå — the northernmost naturist beach in the world’s naturist database at roughly 65°N, operating under the midnight sun in July when the sun doesn’t set.
Planning a Swedish Naturist Trip
Getting there. Stockholm Arlanda is the main hub with good transatlantic and European connections. Gothenburg Landvetter and Malmö-Kastrup (Copenhagen airport, 20 minutes from central Malmö by train) are the west-coast and south-coast entry points. Umeå Airport serves northern Sweden. Sweden’s train network (SJ) and long-distance buses connect the major cities; a hire car is helpful for reaching smaller lake and coastal spots.
When to go. The outdoor naturist season is late June to mid-August. Swedish midsommar (around June 21) is the cultural peak of summer — daylight is nearly continuous in the north, and southern Sweden gets 17–18 hours. July is the warmest and most reliably sunny month. August is slightly cooler but often the best weather month in the south. Ribersborgsbadet in Malmö operates year-round for sauna use.
Sea vs. lake. Swedish naturism divides between sea and freshwater in a way that Czech or German naturism doesn’t. The west coast (Halland, Västra Götaland) offers the Kattegat — warmer, calmer, sandier than the Baltic. The east coast and Gotland offer the Baltic — cooler, clearer, often with a specific smell and light that Baltic swimmers know well. The inland lake spots (Värmland, Östergötland, Kronoberg) offer Sweden’s 500,000 lakes — calm, often warm, mosquito-adjacent in July.
Practical notes. Swedish naturist spots are almost uniformly low-key and local. The Ribersborgsbadet in Malmö is the exception — it has facilities, attendants, and regular crowds. Most other spots are quiet lake shores, rocky coastal outcrops, or sandy dune beaches where the naturist tradition is simply understood and no infrastructure enforces it. Bring everything you need; most spots have no café or changing room. The SNF website (naturistforbundet.se) has an updated beach directory.
Swedish mosquitoes. Worth noting honestly: inland lake spots, particularly in the forest zones of Värmland, Småland, and northern Sweden, have meaningful mosquito populations in June and July. Coastal spots (Halland, Skåne, Gotland) are substantially less affected. Factor this in when choosing between a west-coast beach and a Värmland lake on a warm windless June evening.
Cross-Links
Swedish naturism sits within a broader Scandinavian and northern European context. Denmark, directly south of Skåne across the Øresund, has a similar outdoor-access culture with naturist spots along its coasts and in its lake district. Norway, sharing a long border with Värmland and Bohuslän, has a smaller naturist network with the same friluftsliv foundation.
For naturism with more reliable sun, the Germany guide covers the FKK Baltic coast (Rügen, Usedom, Sylt) that many Swedish naturists visit as an extension of their summer. The Croatia guide covers the Adriatic FKK resorts — Koversada, Valalta, Rab — that serve as the southern European naturist destination for the Swedish market. For visitors new to naturism, the First Time at a Nude Beach guide addresses the questions that arise at any location, from Malmö to Gotland.
