Clothing-Optional Netherlands: The Complete Guide to Dutch Naturism

The Netherlands has 48 documented naturist beaches spread across the North Holland dune coast, South Holland's Randstad shores, Zeeland's delta islands, and four inland provinces — the highest density of officially designated naturist beaches per kilometre of coastline of any country in Europe. The Nederlandse Naturisten Federatie has been organising this since 1930, and Dutch municipalities have been designating specific beach sections for nearly as long.

The Netherlands has arguably the highest density of officially designated naturist beach sections per kilometre of coastline of any country in Europe. Along the 120km of North Holland dune coast, designated naaktstrand sections recur every few kilometres from Den Helder south to Haarlem. South Holland’s Randstad shore — Scheveningen, Kijkduin, Noordwijk, Katwijk, Hook of Holland — has a parallel network. Zeeland’s delta islands add eight more. Two are within the city of Amsterdam itself.

The infrastructure behind this density is the oldest national naturist organisation in the world outside Germany: the Nederlandse Naturisten Federatie, founded in 1930, which has spent 95 years working with Dutch municipalities to formalise what was already happening informally on Dutch beaches. The result is 48 documented naturist spots, almost all carrying explicit municipal designation under local bylaw, all publicly accessible without membership or advance booking, most with clear signage at both ends of the naturist section.

Dutch naturism rests on one of the most explicit statutory foundations of any country. Article 430a of the Wetboek van Strafrecht (Criminal Code) provides that nudity does not constitute an offence at locations designated for that purpose by the competent authority, or at locations so remote or isolated that nudity cannot reasonably give offence to others. This double provision — designation or isolation — gives Dutch naturism two distinct legal bases simultaneously.

In practice, the first provision is the operative one for most Dutch naturist beaches. Municipal authorities designate specific beach sections via the Algemene Plaatselijke Verordening (APV) — the general local by-law that each Dutch municipality enacts for public order in its jurisdiction. An APV naaktstrand designation makes nudity at that section affirmatively lawful, not merely tolerated. The majority of the 48 locations in this guide carry explicit APV designation.

Where formal designation is absent, Dutch gedoogbeleid (tolerance policy) functions as a second layer. Gedoogbeleid formally documents non-enforcement at specific locations — the municipality acknowledges the practice and declines to act against it. This is the framework under which several of the smaller inland spots (Bussloo, Maarsseveense Plassen) operate.

The NNF (Nederlandse Naturisten Federatie) maintains ongoing relationships with municipalities across the country and advocates for new designations where long-established informal naturist use exists. The result is a system that is more transparent and institutionally stable than the informal-tolerance frameworks in Sweden, the Czech Republic, or the UK.

North Holland: The Dune Coast and Amsterdam

North Holland has 20 of the 48 Dutch naturist spots — the richest concentration — covering the full arc of the province’s coastline from Den Helder in the north to the IJmuiden/Bloemendaal area in the south, plus three spots within the Amsterdam urban area.

Amsterdam and its Lakes

The closest naturist option to central Amsterdam is Naaktstrand Gaasperplas — a designated nudist beach on the Gaasperplas recreational lake in southeast Amsterdam, reachable by metro (line 53 to Gaasperplas). It is a genuine in-city naturist beach, on a lake that also hosts water sports and family swimming, with the naturist section clearly signed on the eastern shore. This is the most accessible urban naturist swimming in the country.

Zonneweide Amsterdamse Bos is a different kind of option: not a swimming beach but a designated naturist sunbathing meadow (zonneweide — sun meadow) in the Amsterdamse Bos, the large artificial forest park on Amsterdam’s southwestern edge near Amstelveen. Established in the 1960s, it is one of the older formally designated naturist areas in the Netherlands and draws a regular urban crowd.

East of Amsterdam, Almeerderstrand and Zilverstrand Almere are lakeside naturist beaches on the IJmeer near Almere — the new city built on reclaimed polder land 25km from Amsterdam. Baaiegatstrand is a further Amsterdam-adjacent option on a sheltered inlet near Landsmeer.

Texel and the Wadden Coast

Nudist Beach Texel De Cocksdorp near the northern tip of Texel and Nudist Beach Texel - Den Hoorn in the south provide naturist options on the Wadden Islands’ largest island. Texel’s North Sea beaches are wide, flat, and exposed — the characteristic Wadden coast landscape of fine sand, marram grass, and enormous sky. Both spots are on the western (North Sea) coast. Texel is reached by a 20-minute ferry from Den Helder.

Naaktstrand Groote Keeten and Strandslag Falga are on the mainland coast opposite Texel, north of Callantsoog, where the North Holland dune coast is at its widest and most exposed.

The Bergen–Schoorl–Egmond Cluster

The municipalities of Bergen and Schagen in the central North Holland coast host a remarkable concentration of naturist beaches. Naaktstrand Bergen, Naaktstrand Schoorl, and Naaktstrand Egmond Zuid are three designated naturist beaches within roughly 15km of each other, all on the same continuous dune coast backed by the Noord-Hollands Duinreservaat — the largest active dune system in Western Europe, stretching 40km between Camperduin and IJmuiden.

This stretch of coast is what Dutch beach naturism looks like at its best: massive dunes, wide sand exposed at low tide, clean North Sea water, and the quiet authority of a beach that has been designated and used naturalistically for decades without controversy.

Naaktstrand Callantsoog and Nudist Beach Callantsoog (two listings for overlapping sections of the same Callantsoog beach) are further north in Gemeente Schagen.

Zandvoort, Bloemendaal, and Castricum

The Zandvoort and Bloemendaal coast — the section of North Holland dune beach immediately west of Haarlem and closest to Amsterdam by public transport — has several naturist sections. Strand Bloemendaal is one of the best-attended, on a beach immediately south of Bloemendaal aan Zee known for its beach clubs. IJmuiden Beach is just south, near the entrance to the North Sea Canal. The Nudistenstrand FKK strand near Zandvoort is a named naturist section on the same coast.

FKK Castricum pad doodstil is a naturist access path to the beach in the Castricum dune area — a designated naturist section between the dune path and the sea. Nudist Area Geestmerambacht and Spaarnwoude are recreational-area naturist spots further inland in the Haarlem-Amsterdam corridor.

South Holland: The Randstad Shore

South Holland has 16 naturist spots, covering the full length of the province’s coastline from Katwijk in the north to Hook of Holland in the south, plus several inland recreational lake options in the Rotterdam and Den Haag hinterlands.

The Den Haag Cluster

The Hague municipality (Gemeente Den Haag) has three naturist beaches within its limits. Scheveningen Naaktstrand is on the Scheveningen seafront — the North Sea beach attached to The Hague’s seaside district, one of the most visited beach areas in the country. Naaktstrand Kijkduin is on the southern Kijkduin beach, a quieter district. Nude Beach Westduinpark is in the Westduinpark dune nature reserve between Kijkduin and Monster — one of the more beautiful and secluded Den Haag-area naturist options. Naaktstrand Delft, just outside the Den Haag/Delft urban area, is a fourth option.

Noordwijk and Katwijk

Naaktstrand Noordwijk, Duindamseslag and Naaktstrand Noordwijk, Langevelderslag are two distinct naturist sections on the Noordwijk coast — the beach town directly north of The Hague known for its flower auction houses and bulb fields. Two naturist sections within a few kilometres reflects how thoroughly the Dutch coast has been segmented for naturist use.

FKK naturisten naakt strand at Katwijk marks the southern naturist section of the Katwijk beach.

Rotterdam’s Beaches and Lakes

Rotterdam reaches the sea at Hook of Holland, and Nudist Beach Hook of Holland is the naturist section there — on the same beach where the Europoort ferries arrive from Harwich. Naaktstrand Maasvlakte is on the Maasvlakte — the vast artificial land extension south of the Europoort — a broad, exposed North Sea beach with a naturist section that benefits from the area’s low visitor pressure. Nudist Beach Rockanje is on Voorne-Putten island.

Inland, Rotterdam has two lake naturist spots. Nudist Beach Kralingse Bos is in the Kralingse Bos park on the eastern edge of Rotterdam — a lake-park naturist area within the city. Nudist Beach Zevenhuizerplas is a recreational lake naturist beach northeast of the city.

Nudist Beach Noord Aa, Naturisten Strand Vlietlanden, Monster Beach, and Naaktstrand Brielse Meer complete the South Holland count — inland lake and canal naturist spots spread across the Randstad polder landscape.

Zeeland: The Delta Coast

Zeeland — the province of islands and peninsulas where the Rhine, Maas, and Scheldt deltas meet the North Sea — has 8 naturist beaches. The landscape here is different from the unbroken dune coast of North and South Holland: Zeeland is an archipelago of former islands, now connected by the Delta Works sea barriers, with beaches on both the North Sea coast and the sheltered sides of the tidal channels.

Walcheren: Domburg and Its Neighbours

The western tip of Walcheren — the peninsula containing Middelburg and Flushing — has three naturist beaches within a few kilometres of each other. Naaktstrand Domburg is just north of the seaside resort of Domburg, one of the oldest bathing resorts in the Netherlands. Nudist Beach Oranjezon is in the Oranjezon dune nature reserve immediately north of Domburg — a protected dune area with a naturist section that combines scenic dune landscape with good bathing. Nudist Beach Oostkapelle is a few kilometres further north at Oostkapelle.

Naaktstrand Groede is on the western coast of Zeeuws-Vlaanderen — the southern shore of the Westerschelde estuary near the Belgian border.

Schouwen-Duiveland: Brouwersdam and Renesse

Naaktstrand Brouwersdam is one of the finest naturist beaches in the Netherlands — a broad North Sea beach on the outer face of the Brouwersdam, the sea barrier that closes the Grevelingen inlet between Schouwen-Duiveland and Goeree-Overflakkee. The dam’s outer North Sea beach is long, wide, and backed by the concrete barrier; the combination of engineered grandeur and open coast makes it distinctive. Renesse Strand and Naaktstrand Nieuw Haamstede are further along the Schouwen-Duiveland North Sea coast.

Noord-Beveland: Neeltje Jans

Naaktstrand Neeltje Jans is on the Neeltje Jans artificial island — the construction island built in the middle of the Oosterschelde for the Oosterscheldekering (the tidal barrier, the most complex of the Delta Works). The island now hosts a water sports and beach area with a naturist section on its North Sea coast.

Other Provinces: Gelderland, Utrecht, Friesland, and North Brabant

Four naturist spots are spread across the inland and northern provinces.

Bussloo Naturist Beach near Voorst in Gelderland is a freshwater lake naturist beach in the eastern Netherlands — a sand-bottomed recreational lake in the Veluwe region, well-established and formally designated.

Gedoogd naaktstrand Maarsseveense Plassen in Utrecht province — the name literally means “tolerated nude beach, Maarsseveense lakes, second beach” — is one of the clearest examples of the gedoogbeleid framework in practice. The gedoogd in the name acknowledges formal tolerance without formal designation. The Maarsseveense Plassen are recreational lakes between Utrecht and Amsterdam.

Naaktstrand Groene Ster is in the Groene Ster park on the southern edge of Leeuwarden, the Frisian capital — a lake park naturist area serving the north Netherlands.

Naaktstrand Vuren near Woudrichem in North Brabant is a riverside naturist spot on the Waal (Rhine) near the historic Loevestein Castle.

Planning a Dutch Naturist Trip

Getting there. Amsterdam Schiphol (AMS) is one of Europe’s major hub airports with extensive European and intercontinental connections. Rotterdam The Hague Airport (RTM) serves the South Holland coast cluster. The Netherlands has one of the most comprehensive public transport networks in Europe — train to Haarlem for Bloemendaal, train to Den Haag Centraal and then tram to Scheveningen, train to Den Helder for the Texel ferry. Most North and South Holland naturist beaches are accessible from Amsterdam or Den Haag by train and bike in under an hour.

The Dutch cycling advantage. The Netherlands’ cycling infrastructure makes coastal naturist tourism uniquely practical. Most of the North Holland dune coast is accessible via the Hollandse Kustfietsroute (Holland Coast Cycling Route) — you can cycle between multiple naturist beaches in a single day, stopping at each designated section along the dune path. The South Holland coast is similarly bikeable from Den Haag. Bike rentals are available at all train stations.

When to go. The beach naturist season runs roughly June through September. July and August are the reliable peak months — sea temperatures reach 18–20°C on the North Sea coast and slightly warmer in the sheltered Zeeland inlets. June is often warm and less crowded. September shoulder season works well in good years. The Netherlands’ weather is changeable by European standards: a cloud-free July day on the dune coast is glorious; a rainy August is less so. The inland lake spots (Gaasperplas, Bussloo, Maarsseveense Plassen) tend to be warmer and calmer than the exposed North Sea coast.

Dutch beach vocabulary. Naaktstrand = nude beach. Naturistenstrand / naturistenbad = naturist beach/bath. Gedoogd = tolerated. APV = Algemene Plaatselijke Verordening (local by-law). Gemeentelijk aangewezen = municipally designated. Zonneweide = sun meadow (naturist sunbathing area). NNF = Nederlandse Naturisten Federatie. The naaktstrand prefix in a place name is self-identifying.

The Zeeland trip. Zeeland is worth treating as a separate destination: 8 naturist beaches spread across an extraordinary landscape of sea barriers, tidal channels, and delta islands. Rent a bike or car based in Middelburg or Domburg and spend 2–3 days visiting Domburg, Oranjezon, Brouwersdam, and Renesse. The Zeeland coast in July is one of the finest naturist destinations in northern Europe.

Dutch naturism is the most institutionally developed naturist infrastructure in northern Europe. For the south, Germany’s FKK Baltic coast culture — covered in the Germany guide — is a natural extension. Belgium (not separately catalogued) shares a dune coast border with Zeeland and has similar designated naturist sections. France’s naturist coast in Nouvelle-Aquitaine is the natural destination for Dutch naturists seeking Mediterranean-equivalent sun; see the France guide. For the broader European legal context, the Public Nudity Laws by Country guide covers Article 430a in context. For first-timers at any naturist location, the First Time at a Nude Beach guide covers the universal questions.
